The fraught history between Indigenous communities and Canada’s colonial past is interwoven with complex narratives, traumas, and political intrigues. At the heart of this intricate web lies the contentious issue of residential schools.

This topic has recently found itself back in the limelight following an article by Conrad Black titled “The often-ignored truth — The entire ‘mass graves’ controversy is a fraud,” published on August 25, 2023, in the National Post. Black’s piece challenges the recent discoveries of unmarked graves and criticizes the swift national and international responses.

While the discourse surrounding this subject is diverse and, at times, divisive, it is imperative to approach it with sensitivity and respect.

As someone not of Indigenous heritage, I cannot claim to understand or fully grasp the profound pain and trauma these communities face. However, as an advocate and supporter of reconciliation, I believe in the necessity to listen, understand, and recognize the actionable steps we must undertake to redress past wrongs and forge a path toward genuine healing.
